Bring 'em on! I've been enjoying the 5.1 sets of th J Tull, XTC, Be Bop Deluxe etc and getting VdGGm is a VERY welcome surprise.

So the cat is now out of the bag about the forthcoming Charisma Years box set which has been in production for some time. I'll just quote a bit about what it says in Prog #119: "Later in 2021, the band's classic albums will be given a new stereo remix treatment and released on vinyl. There will also be a colossal 20-disc box set, The Charisma Years, containing lots of previously unreleased material alongside the new versions of Pawn Hearts and Godbluff. Technically, the big difference now is remixes and 5.1 mixes..."

Phil, any idea what's going to fill the remaining disks after the official albums are subtracted from 20. For years we have been told there is nothing in the vaults so what can it be?

Great to see a new PH/Vdgg forum up and running. Nice work guys
Keen for more info on this box set as it is long overdue imo. Suggest that the remaining discs (once the official albums are accounted for) will be "re-claimed bootleg" recordings etc Recent King Crimson boxes and the Gentle Giant box have used this as a way of bulking out the releases. eg There is a more of the Rimini 75 show early/late to be used (some obviously appeared on "The Box" back in 2000) Hopefully a cleaned up version of the "Lighthouse keepers" live from Belgian television. Many other good/ex quality aud boots they could pull from. Another "holy grail" for me would be a PH solo mega box with live recordings across the years similar to the old "Pilgrimage" boot but in ex quality.

Please not the Rimini stuff again ...
There are better sounding concerts from 1975, and the performance is somehow underwhelming. Or maybe the tape needs only some speed correction.
But I think a 50th Anniversary Box Set of the 3 first generation albums would be a good idea. I would like such a thing which includes everything from 1970 to 1972, which is available in good quality. The 3 albums as released, the singles and rarities on another disc, the BBC sessions, and one disc for the live stuff which is listenable (Beat Club, BBC in Concert, Belgian TV). And if there is some rehearsal and demo stuff, bring em on.
And then, if still nothing is there live, why not the best sounding of the boots of that time? The Basel tape from 72 and the one from Bern from 71. Plus White Hammer from Novara, and actually Rock and Rôle and In the Black Room from Rome 27.5.73 are also decent, even if they are not exactly VdGG.
And all remastered so well, that even the audio popes have not much to complain, and all the bootleg stuff will sound at least better than ever.
Let's count, this would amount to a 9 disc box alone for the stuff we are already familiar with ...
I'll buy it ,even if I don't care for 5.1.

Regarding the 20-disc box, i really hope they won't include any audience sourced live recording, the sound on these is always appalling.
There are the TV appearences that can be added, both as audio and video, and clearly there are the BBC stuff that can fill up 3CD at least. Regarding BBC sessions, a few big upgrades have been recently unearthed (good quality off-air recordings of Lost and Killer from 12 october 1970 - Killer is the full 8 minutes, Theme One/Dambusters March from 23 september 1971 and Octopus from the very first session of 18 november 1968 - this recent upgrade comes from the broadcast repeat of february 1969). All of them are now on par with the other already released BBC stuff. There's also the edited Killer (6:15) + Peter Hammill brief interview from 12 october 1970 that can be found in even better sound quality on a rare BBC Transcription Disc (i've got a great vinyl transfer) and there are the first 3 tracks (Man-Erg, W and Killer) from the 23 september 1971 session that can be found on another rare BBC Transcription Disc (Pick Of The Pops For Your D.J. #362).
The withdrawed Shel Talmy mix of The Least We Can Do album could be added as a bonus, not only out of curiosity, but also because it offers a different perspective of a few songs. Refugees is outstanding in my opinion, with Guy Evans' drums prominently brought to the foreground.
If work on the box is not completed yet, i suggest whoever is taking care of it to contact some VDGG expert in order to avoid the usual errors and omissions that ruin every release like that.

Big spread in the next Wire mag as well. Any mention of the release schedule? Reading through my copy of Wire, purchased from my local magazine vendor today, it mentions, at the end of the first article, that "The Charisma Years will be released by Universal in July". Start saving those pennies now.

Remix box set now available to pre-order from Burning Shed for £120 plus P&P. Yes a signed postcard edition, however overseas buyers beware that the shipping cost from Burning Shed are way up there, £66. That said, when i added 2 copies to my cart, the box set base price dropped to £100 per copy.. glitch? HMV have also updated their page for the box set, price is now £139.. Unrelatedly , the Burning Shed have the Caravan 37 disc box set too, £275 + £109 shipping = makes me wonder i should just content myself with my old 70's vinyl copies.

If work on the box is not completed yet, i suggest whoever is taking care of it to contact some VDGG expert in order to avoid the usual errors and omissions that ruin every release like that.
It is probably too late, but this is the stuff which also could be or should be on the set to make it complete:
1. The 2nd single version of Refugees, a different mix which was released on CD so far only on the I Phrophesy Disaster compilation.
2. A slightly longer version of the Lighthouse Keepers part The Clot Thickens, only released on the cassette version of Repeat Performance, a compilation which also featured the aforementioned Refugees version. Really slightly, and of not much interest to me, but a real rarity.
3. Theme 1/The Dambuster's March which is the last track from the 23.9.71 BBC in Concert, which is meanwhile also available in similar quality as the other 3 tracks. And that one I really miss.
4. If the 2 yet unreleased tracks of the BBC session from 12.10.70 are not better than what we fans already have (which is good, but not great), then they should have added the excellent but edited Killer version, which was unofficially released on a BBC bootleg CD.
5. The Shel Talmy mix of The Least We Can Do, but I can understand that this could be something the band does not want.
Well yes, and I would like to know why Time Vaults is not included, such a box is a perfect place for these tracks of mostly poorer audio quality.
