In July, Cherry Red Records are releasing a couple of box sets that include VDGG/PJAH tracks: Separate Paths Together – An Anthology Of British Male Singer/Songwriters 1965-1975 is a 3CD set that includes 'Easy to Slip Away' on CD 1. Taking Some Time On – Underground Sounds Of 1970 is a 4CD set that includes Refugees (single version) on Disk 1. Strictly for the completists, I guess, although both box sets contain loads of other stuff that might be of interest. Full details on www.cherryredrecords.co.uk

The 7'' single version of Refugees has been included on many VA compilations after it had been included in remastered form on the 2005 edition of The Least We Can Do as part of the VDGG catalog remasters. Anyway, that remastered version of Refugees has always sounded bad to my ears: it's like the used source was damaged, the sound deteriorates towards the end of the song and the dynamic range value is very low. In my opinion the only great sounding version of the 'real' 7'' single version of Refugees can be found on the 1993 VA release 'The Famous Charisma Box': www.discogs.com/Various-The-Famous-Charisma-Box-The-History-Of-Charisma-Records-1968-1985/release/2501122Here it sounds just like on the original single with a much better dynamic range value (DR11 vs DR8). I called it the 'real' 7'' version because there's a different single version which is probably the one found on the very rare acetate disc marked as 'quicker fade' which is available digitally on the 'I Prophesy Disaster' compilation: www.vandergraafgenerator.co.uk/pawnhearts/refugeesacetate.jpgIncidentally, The Famous Charisma Box marks the first digital appearance of Genesis' Happy The Man non-album track. Remaining on the subject of VA compilation albums, there's another interesting 3cd set called 'Spirit Of Joy: Tales From The Polydor Underground 1967-1974' which is the only official digital source of both sides of VDGG first single 'People You Were Going To/Firebrand': www.discogs.com/Various-Spirit-Of-Joy-Tales-From-The-Polydor-Underground-1967-1974/release/3336900

Not the only one.
Both single tracks were released in the 90s on the Repertoire CD release of the Aerosol album, but I have read that the sound quality on this box is much better, and also better than on the new Aerosol Deluxe box, which also features both.

Yeah, I've got the Repertoire CD release from 1997 too featuring both sides of the first single. Also features extensive notes from Chris Welch, legendary music journo and author.

It appears the Repertoire cd wasn't an authorized release, which led to the FIE release some years later, which however didn't include the 2 single tracks.
That box marks actually the first time those 2 songs have been officially released.

Not so sure about the legality of the Repertoire release. I think the Fie CD was released as reaction and actually only a few months later, and the Repertoire CD was then indeed withdrawn for some time, but later was available again, so that I assume the rights issue was somehow settled. It is probably still in print.
Repertoire is at least not a bootleg label, they are specialised in quality releases.

Yes, you're probably right about the Repertoire cd, let's just say that it wasn't fully blessed by Peter Hammill, but it's probably still not an unauthorized release.
