I've had my vinyl copy since 1972 and the original cd version from I don't know when. I have always wondered why there were two combinations of bassist/drummer used - was it that Guy and Nic weren't available one day and so others were used? I understand that the reissue has sleeve notes - is there any mention of why who played on what?

I never read anything about that. Not even fan speculations why he did not just had recorded the album with the band + Potter + Fripp. It would have worked too.
Maybe he liked to work with the others, maybe PH felt that some songs worked better with the Lindisfarne members, or maybe they came by that closer to their original sound, maybe he just wanted these old songs sound not too close to the actual band sound, maybe ...

It does say who played on which tracks but I don't see an alternative bassist/drummer; just Ray Jackson, Rod Clements and Fripp.

But Martin Pottinger is the drummer on the 3 "Lindisfarne songs". He also plays together with GE on Imperial Zeppelin. And Clements is also listed for bass.
I think that it is an underrated album. For me far better than anything PH did solo after 1983. Actually apart from maybe Present also better than the newer VdGG albums.

I was just saying what it says in the re-master blurb. There is also the list of who plays on which songs. Maybe I should scan it and add to the Fool's Mate page...

Then maybe I just do not understand what you mean with the term "alternative bassist/drummer"?

As a combo - bass and drums usually thought of as the rhythm section and play together on a regular basis (like Guy and Nic). Martin Pottinger was a roadie and part-time drummer and I doubt very much if he ever had a regular thing going with Rod Clements. A very minor point but that's what I meant.
